We recently took an extended shopping trip to the window dressing store, and spent most of the day trying to decide what we were going to buy to put into our new windows. We completed an addition to our home, and it opens up the kitchen and adds a whole new family room.

So there are a lot more windows that need to be covered and we want to get it right the first time so we don’t have to revisit this decision in the near future. In the end, I just insisted that we go with the best quality, the highest quality is always the best option and they are going to last longer than anything else.

For us and for our window sizes, that means Hunter Douglas blinds. There are many different versions of blinds, and many different brands and quality levels, but the Hunter Douglas ones are the best on the market, and they perfectly fit our requirements and needs for the new space.

It was apparent when we first walked in that not all of the blinds on sale or on offer were going to meet our needs. We wanted a specific style of blinds, one that would be really easy to use, very functional, and would also match the blinds in the rest of the house.

We didn’t need a perfect match, but we didn’t want something that was obviously different or that would clash in some way. We have Hunter Douglas blinds in other rooms in the house, and we love the easy way that they function, and we have never had a problem with them not working correctly for any reason.

We knew that this room would get a lot more use than our other rooms, especially since it is a part of the extended kitchen, and it really just flows from the kitchen into the new living room. There is a new deck outside the back doors, and so in going in and out of the house onto the deck, the doors will be opened and closed a lot, and the blinds are going to be raised and lowered quite a bit more than in other rooms where we already have the Hunter Douglas blinds.

So we needed to be sure we were getting really high quality so that it would last through all the increased wear and tear that is sure to happen in this space. After we looked through everything they had, and we tried out all the materials and all the samples, we decided to go with the updated version of the Hunter Douglas blinds that we already have in our home.

They are going to match, and they are more durable so they will handle all the additional use that we know is coming. And of course, they are going to match the rest of the room perfectly, and the rest of the house will almost match perfectly. The color is neutral, so it won’t be noticeable if they are off a bit.

The Roofing is a Detailed Task Requiring Many Steps

Putting a new roof on a building is complicated; fortunately, a lot of roofing will survive for at least twenty years if it is installed properly. The weather of an area can also influence a roof’s lifespan. You should know what things indicate a deteriorating roof; rotting, curling, and missing shingles are all signs that your roof needs to be fixed or replaced. Sometimes roofs are damaged, but the damages are not easily spotted.

When looking to replace a roof, the first thing you need to do is figure out what kind of material you want to use. A cheap but durable option is asphalt, but keep in mind that even the strongest durability of this material can be damaged by icy weather and high winds.

Clay and slate are higher quality roofing options that resist decay, fire, and pests, but both of these materials will cost significantly more than asphalt shingles. For roofing that is more suited to a particular climate, you might want to look into wooden or metal roofing. Roofing comes in a few different forms, from individual tiles to rolls of shingles.

Old roofs need to be removed before new roofs can be installed on buildings. All of the nails and shingles in the building’s roof will have to be torn off and thrown away. The newly exposed tar paper and beams will have to be inspected once all of the shingles and nails are gone. Tar paper and beam replacement or repair may be necessary.

Installation of a new roof can begin once the old roof has been removed. You may need new trusses, which are just the frames of the roof, and new tar paper will have to be put on top of the trusses. Any roofing tiles or shingles will have to be installed one row at a time, and overlapping these rows will improve the performance of the roofing. After all parts of the roof have been tightened down, roofing cement is applied over the nails and around the shingles. Even a small roofing job can take days, assuming it is done well.

Due to the complexity and duration of a roofing job, many homeowners choose to have a roofing contractor do the work. Roofing contractors can repair, remove, and replace all types of roofs. While specific schooling is not always required for roofing contractors, a licensed contractor will need to educate and train a prospective contractor. All roofing contractors need to be licensed by the state, and this license cannot be obtained until enough on-the-job training has been completed.

Any roof contractor you hire should have a valid license and insurance policy. All contractors should also have insurance, like worker’s compensation and liability insurance. Be sure to personally examine jobs that have recently been done by a contractor. Get an estimate from a few different contractors, and always have your chosen contractor draft you a contract.
